M2N32-SLI DE Luxe boot failure

Please excuse the ignorance of a rank amateur, but your help would be appreciated. Or, to put it another way, I thought I knew what I was doing, but apparently I don’t.!!

I have a self build system based on an ASUS M2N32 SLI DeLuxe motherboard which has been running perfectly with a Seagate Barracuda ATA iv hard disc, (model ST360021A), together with an LG DVD optical drive, connected in a master/slave setup from the primary IDE Mobo socket.

I now wish to add a second DVD drive, and thought the best way of doing this was to connect the DVDs in parallel from the IDE socket as master/slave. According to the ASUS instruction book the hard disc could then operate from one of the 6 mobo SATA sockets, as the HDD clearly states ATA on the label. However, the serial link cable has no direct connection to the rear of the hard disc drive. The rear socket is clearly 40 pin IDE, therefore I fitted an IDE/SATA adapter hoping this would solve the problem. The SATA signal cable was then fitted between the adapter and the SATA 1 socket, and the 4 pin power cables were also connected.

In BIOS the SATA controller was enabled, but no HDD is recognized – only the two DVDs. On boot up I get the error message “Disc error - press any key to restart” Pressing a key gives “Disc boot failure. Insert system disc and press Enter”
I put the ASUS system disc in one of the DVD drives to see if any additional SATA drivers were needed, but the same error messages appear. I’m getting nowhere.
Obviously, I’m doing something I shouldn’t, or I haven’t done something I should.
Any help (or criticism) would be sincerely appreciated.!!
Ron

Update
Have now managed to get the ST360021A to be recognised in BIOS, but still get the same error mesages. Still no boot.

just a tip the box must say sata on the front not making fun of you just telling you for next time
did you get a disk with the adaptor?

Pies,
thanks for that.
I've had the herd drive for some time but I don't see an installation disc in my collection. I think I remember downloading the installation file from Seagate web site.
Anyway, I took the whole lot to bits and started again from scratch - and it worked. The HDD works from the SATA 1 port and the DVD ROMs are also recognised.
I can only assume I had a bum connection somewhere, though I'm sure I checked them all.
Not to worry - we're up and running !!
Ron.
