So Many Deeds

hello.
i'm currently a film student in nyc. i've been working with macs for a few years now, but i personally own a pc.. i would like to purchase a mac very soon so i will be able to edit my work here at home. however, do to my full time school schedule, i dont have time to get a decent job to pay for one.
i dont have nearly enough saved up, and in order to pay monthly for the 20 inch i-mac i prefer, i would need a credit card but do my lack of employment; i dont approve..
anyway, the reason i am posting is because i would like to know if anyone knows if a desktop mac g4 is good enough for me to use just for final cut pro to edit. im sure it could hold the program, but will the computer be able to hold alot of footage and whatever else?
i know about film and editing, but when it comes to computers, i'm no scientist heh..the reason i ask is because i got a good offer on one recently, and the old tv studio i did video editing work in, had g4 computers. they serverd the purpose but they also all had external hard drives attached.
so all i really need to know are the possibilities of the g4 ON ITS OWN, taking care of the jobs i need to do. i would most likely need an external though ey?
thank you.
