^^^ That's more than fine for what you plan on doing, but personally I would save some cash and get a £500 laptop with core i3 and HD graphics;

Try dell or other laptop manufacturers. I picked the first laptop because it was in your budget. But for your needs, I would go cheaper. You won't notice much difference :)

EDIT

13" Macbook Pros are £800-£900, they're very sleek, (And powerful, I think overkill, for you) but it's a matter of opinion. Some people prefer OS X.

should have mentioned this, but im asking for a friend. but i know what he wants.
i think that a MAC would be too powerfull for what he will want to do. i think it would be alot better if he has a windows OS so that he could use microsoft office along with other programs.

just got some more info. he wants a sleek unique design. he says he likes the dell adamo XPS but that it looks too uncomfortable to have on a lap. he also says that performance is as improtant as the design.
im going to look around and see what i can find.
EDIT:
been looking at some of the ASUS designs. they have some really nice laptops. problem is i cant find the price, dont they sell them directly from ASUS? where can i find the prices?

A mac is a good choice,Solid and reliable but they are on the pricey side.

Just depends on if your willing to spend that much really....personally i don't think they are worth what apple price them at and that's why i don't have one!

If they were priced more reasonable id buy one tomorrow.

A Mac for the design and office is available for the mac. Personally when it comes to desktops... yeah PCs win if your a tight arse but for the notebook range with all the technologies apple puts into them they have to win there

I believe he said unique...the macbook is far from unique.

You should be able to find Asus notebooks at any major retailer. Since design is important you should check out some of the sony laptops as well.

If your going to call a PC unique you'd make a great sales man at PCWORLD. The only unique computer would be a Laptop running jolicloud or google OS

its right though the macbook is far from unique.
ASUS has some pretty unique (to asus anyway) laptops, but it doesnt give the price, so its hard to compare them without looking on another website.

That is a matter of opinion and not fact really. mac laptops are pretty unique in the sense that only Apple designs them. Starting with the unibody chasis, that no other manufacturer does, I would say they are unique.

I guess the fact that they've kept the same general design for years..my 07 macbook looks pretty damn close to the ones you buy today. Get back to your job at the Apple store.

Your right though, it is a matter of preference, but in my opinion, for a computer to be unique it cant look like the millions of other ones out there. I'm assuming the OP is thinking the same.

In october 14th Apple started unibody on the Pro line. In 2009 Apple made a unibody macbook, they are so sturdy.

They in no way shape or form look the same. I have 6,000 Macbooks from 2007 in my deployment at work. We just got 500 new ones in of the 2009 whites, and some of the 2009 aluminum unibody.

They redesign everything about once every 3 years. If you want proof just look at the iMac series.

this is getting into too much of a discussion about if macs change their design or not.
what i think my friend wants to know is will a mac OS suit his needs.

well you mentioned online games. Mac has steam now and while the games will be limited, so will the performance on a laptop. Any laptop.

For general use. a Mac will be just fine. That would be my choice for your friend.
