Mac OSX

I have always liked macs just because they look nice but have never had one cos i think that PCs are better.

Anyway, i was thinking of installing mac on my pc when i realised i could just install a transformation pack and have the mac look with the compatibility of a pc.

which is just awesome.

but now im thinking is there anthing on mac that i havent thought about and that would be better to have?

basically what am i missing out on my not having the actual OS installed?

thanks.

The main differences are under the hood. In windows, under the hood you have the windows shell and the windows kernel. Under the hood of OS X you have a Unix shell and a Unix kernel running. The major differences are permissions, binaries, file system, and of course languages. However, usage is pretty much the same in the UI. You have system preferences on OS X instead of control panel, you have safari instead of IE, you run applications from either the doc or by double clicking the icon.

Some major differences are user preferences versus system preferences and OS X runs self contained applications (for the most part).

ok thanks.

well ill stick with xp and a transformation. less messing around and no need to go searching for mac software.

if it is just the look you want then the transformation pack would be ideal. If you want the benefits of running OS X, then you should go look at getting a Mac.

i just wanted to know what the benefits were lol.

thanks

benefits:

self contained applications (no messy registry to deal with)
user level preferences
no viruses
unix security (more secure by design)
stable
Higher quality control
more bundled features and software (it can do more out of the box)

cons:
initial cost is a bit more (but cheaper if you use all the out of the box features)
lacks some third party (but there is nothing a PC can do that a mac can't)
lacks some customization (can't build your own mac)

It comes down to personal preference, but there are definitely advantages of running a Mac over a PC and vice versa.

well thanks for that.

but while im at it. why are macs not customizable like PCs?

i dont really understand how it all works. i always just used to thats that mac was just an OS and had nothing to do with the system lol.

Even though you really honestly can't compare cars to computers, an analogy I use sometimes to describe the differences is comparing two different car models. Honda and Acura are the same cars. All made by honda, all have the same parts and same engines, with the exception that Acuras have more standard features. So, a Mac would be like an Acura, and it has more standard features, and a PC would be like a honda which you could buy and add after market parts on it to make it equal to what a Mac can do out of the box.

Out of the box a Mac can:
edit video
author a DVD
record and master music
play a dvd movie
has firewire 800 standard
most of them have built in cameras
fully sync with bluetooth devices
have built in bluetooth/wifi

Windows can't do any of that out of the box and most PC manufacturers don't offer FW800, blue tooth, or wifi as standard features in their PCs. Windows also can't even play a DVD movie out of the box with out either installed third party software or a codec for WMP.

Then of course you have the security factor as well.

out of a box vista can edit a movie, play a dvd, I think u can make a dvd with windows movie maker
and wtf windows can't play a dvd out of the box thats plain bs bs bs ever hear of windows media player or windows media center?

You still have to install a codec. It was the first thing I tried with Windows Vista, and I had let media player connect online and download a codec. So, no it still can't technically play a dvd out of the box.

Windows movie maker blows, you can't do crap in it, and no you can not author a DVD out of the box with windows. You must purchase third party software for it.

ive always thought that photoshop was meant for macs and just adapted for pc. is this correct? is the mac version more advanced then the windows version?

No, adobe develops their products the same. They are tailored to the mac or windows. Like instead of ctrl + c to copy it is cmd + c on OS X.
