mac vs xp...

righteo, i have up to £1000 (English pounds) to spend on a desktop pc but ideally would like to spend less as im am trying to save up for a car.. i would use my pc for photo editing ( as i do loads of photography) and as a entertainment system.. dvds, music etc (most of which is downloaded off bit torrent)

1, which would operating system would you recomend and why? (mac or xp)
2, would i be able to use downloaded programs on the mac like photoshop and dreamweaver aswell as downloaded videos and most importantly would i be able to use bit torrent on a mac
3, would i be able to build a pc with any components and just install a mac operating system onto it..

1. If you're on a budget a PC will do fine. Your computer can be built for less than 500 pounds and still perform well for your uses.
2. Photoshop, BitTorrent, and Macromedia products are all available for the Mac.
3. Mac OSX will only run on Mac hardware, but it can be made to run on a regular x86 machine, just not easily.

@ phildaint: If I were you, I would buy the latest Apple iMac (from £799 (excluding upgrades). OS X is perfect for photo editing, movies, and music. You can get freeware BitTorrent applications such as (my personal favourite) Transmission. The new Apple iMac will suit all your needs, and if you ever need XP, you can simply install that too with a handy application (made by Apple) called Boot Camp. :)

You could go the PC route, and to be fair, XP/Vista would also serve your needs. However, in my opinion, doing it on a Mac is much more pleasant and easier.

The choice is yours. :)
