Is it worth the 180$ to up the default MacBook Pro ram from 8gb to 16gb? What are the pros and cons? Thanks!

My question is how much do you currently use of that now. I doubt you would see a performance increase. You would upgrade if say you where using a lot of RAM. Like I am considering upgrading my RAM to 16 GB because from time to time I get above 5 GB.

Are you looking to upgrade a non-Retina MacBook Pro, or the Retina version? If you are getting the non-Retina version, you can upgrade to 16GB of RAM yourself for $130 and sell the factory memory.

There wouldn't really be any cons other than maybe the expense. Having a lot of RAM is never really a bad thing.

Whether or not it's worth the expense depends on what you're doing. You could get it with 8 and then upgrade to 16 if you feel you need to.

I will say that OS X, especially 10.9, is great at consuming RAM. Whether it's a feature of the OS to use as much as possible for better performance, I find that with the 8GB of RAM in my laptop I only have 1.5-2GB free just at first launch without anything open, and it then gets down to only several hundred MB's free with say Chrome, Outlook, iCal, and a few other small apps open.
