machine wont start....still

well, it wont fully start...when i get around to where the HD should load the OS, it restarts, and thats the maximum amount of time i get out of it. sometimes when im trying to change settings in the bios, it'll shut itself off. it also does this when i try to save changed bios settings. specs below:

Intel P4 2.8 HT
Gigabyte 2004RZ series moherboard (SiS 648FX chipset)
1GB ddr400 RAM (2x512)
Western Digital 160GB HD
(to be installed: Windows XP)

any help would be great!!

Just before it restarts, do you get a bluescreen, even for a fraction of a second? If you're playing around with the bios, it's possible you've changed a setting that you shouldn't have. Resetting the CMOS jumper would revert the motherboard settings back to default.

You say "to be installed: Windows XP" - is there any operating system installed currently? Or were you going into the bios to alter the boot sequence and install it via the CD?

i just got it friday, because i thought the initial problem may have been that the PSU didnt have enough umph to handle the mobo (a 320watt antec)...so i got this one off of tigerdirect. still the same problem.

Edit: i did get the BSOD with my other PSU...and i havent tried resetting the jumpers with this PSU, ill do so now.......seems to have worked, thanks alot!!...why the hell didnt i think of it before though....

Edit2: false alarm...the system shuts off when it starts to load the windows CD

still......

i got more time out of it when i reset the jumpers, but it still randomly shuts off.....help......

by the way, when i save and quit bios, the changes save, but the computer shuts off....hmm....

Please try not to double post in future. There's an edit button for you to add information to your previous post if you haven't received a reply. Like what I've just used for you. And certainly don't create a second thread on the same problem. It's increasing the housekeeping I'm having to perform. ;)

I don't know why, but I have a hunch it's a memory issue. Especially if you've switched PSU's. Try downloading memtest, using the ISO image to create a bootable CD, and run a complete test of your memory. It'll show whether there are any errors. Try that and report back. :)

what info do you need before the system crashes......


by the way. i tried switching memory, from ddr400 to a ddr333, still crashes

So you've successfully burned the CD, and booted from it, and the PC still crashes, even with different sticks of memory installed? Is that what you're saying? I've never known a case where you couldn't get memtest86 to run. I would suggest downloading the bootable Ultimate Bood Disk and doing some CPU tests, but if a similar thing is going to happen, there wouldn't be much point. You could try it and see.

It's certainly a hardware fault of some sort, by trial of elimination if it's not the psu, ram or cpu then the other possibility is a motherboard faliure of some sort. I'm pretty much out of ideas for the moment, and need to get some sleep. Perhaps someone else will have some ideas.
