I'm not sure what it is called, but I am trying to get a picture to look like this in Fireworks 8:

I believe this option was in the Commands>Creative menu is Fireworks MX 2004, but I'm not sure.
Does anyone know how to do this on Fireworks 8?

Thanks.

I don't have the software but graphically it looks like some sort of emboss effect. Look for that in the menus or Help. With that effect in serious graphic editors, you can usually select between "colours from image" or select a colour such as grey.

I still think it could be the emboss effect but the example you posted is not a very well defined object in the first place, or has been blurred after embossing. Here's the excerpt from the manual. Hopefully the image will post OK!

You can use the Emboss Live Filter to make an image, object, or text appear inset into or raised from the canvas.

An object, with Inset Emboss, and with Raised Emboss
To apply an Emboss filter:

1. Click the Add Live Filters button in the Property inspector, then select an emboss option from the pop-up menu:
* Bevel and Emboss > Inset Emboss.
* Bevel and Emboss > Raised Emboss.
2. Edit the filter settings in the pop-up window.

If you want the original object to appear in the embossed area, select Show Object.
3. When you finish, click outside the window or press Enter to close it.

In a proper graphics editor you can change the slope for better control eg, mesa, sharp, rounded. That's the best I can do to assist.

Thanks very much for the help, but it does not work. Perhaps it only works with objects? I am trying to do it to a picture.

OK, maybe I can help some more. A few other filter effects that I thought of are greyscale negative, greyscale solarize, dull chrome effect but I'm really sure it is emboss. Attached is part of image I edited in Photopaint (the grey emboss left a bit of colour in the 24 bit image so I converted to greyscale). My edit is higher contrast than your example but that is easy to fix.

If you know someone with a graphic editor, get them to do it for you. If you can't find anyone, IrfanView has an emboss filter but there is no adjustment other than changing contrast before applying filter. If they are not private images, I don't mind editing some pics for you. Just say and I will private message my email address.

I was just curious on how to do it, no particular image.
I think that Fireworks does not have the ability to do this for images, just objects such as text. It was probably done in photoshop.

Thank you very much for your help!
