Mac's not so good???

Been using my sister's mac laptop a bit lately and i'd be buggered if i can work out what is spose to be so good about them? Imho, i find them to be not very user friendly at all. Maybe they just take awhile to get used to??? but in any case, whats the pro's and con's of owning a mac these days? And now I hear that they part intel anyway!
 
I dont think they are all that great either. They look pretty good, but just arnt as fast or user frienly as a pc.
 
Mac is not really oriented towards a residential market, they interest companies that need high performance computers for apps like Photoshop, Video Editing, etc... Since PowerPCs can get pretty beefed up (dual CPUs, 16GB RAM, etc...) they are quite fast and good for what they do. The home-user Macs are meant IMO for people who want more a more affordable solution to the super-speed and super-expensive counterparts. This would be useful if you worked at a place that used Macs and wanted to make sure everything you did could be compatible to other Macs. I wouldn't think of really ever using a Mac for general home use.

Also, I think Apple is in trouble since the main reason why they were able to beat PCs in video/image production is because it is a native 64bit OS and can handle MUCH more information than 32bit. Now that windows is moving to the 64bit world, Apple might have some stiff competition.
 
To those people that say "macs are more secure", thats not so true. Right now the Mac OS has more bugs than Windows does, and since they moved to an x86 based system, there will be more viruses written for it. So Mac is no longer the OS that is free of viruses and spyware.
 
I like my mac and I like my pc... Both for different reasons... I think mac gets a lot of greif, because people who complain about them, dont actually own or work on one.
I like both, because I own both...
 
i always thought that owning a mac gave you this nostalgic feeling of belonging to a kind of sub-culture, like you werent afraid of stepping into the room in the gallery opening that nobody was looking at for some reason, only to find that there were more people in there just like you who wanted a different view on the world of technology. that, and nothing can beat saying you own a 25,000 dollar computer.

personally, i dont own a mac, but a majority of my time as an art student in high school was spent on an imac...i dont like the single button mouses, but i think macs are geared toward the adage about the journey as opposed to the goal. ...you know what i mean.

I also own both, but i turn on the mac about every 2 months or so.
 
Most people who say macs suck are just biased because they've used a pc their whole life and doesn't know shit about them. I don't have very much experience with them neither but I'm well aware of their capabilities. Just because something is different from what you usaully use doesn't mean it sucks. As far as security the vulnerabilities that have been exposed they are relatively minor. Where as Windows has had many problems. No computer will ever be free of viruses, spyware, etc.

I was a little behind on the security issues. There has been a vulnerability exposed that is considered "extremely critical" (also a couple worms and trojans have surfaced). Now that the mac is getting more and more popular your going to be hearing more and more things being exposed and that's just the simple truth. I don't even understand how this is a security issue argument. We all know Windows is far from perfect. Mac is also going to have its problems. When it comes to the performance side macs are good quality computers.

I have used both a PC and Mac extensively. To be honest, I like using PCs a whole lot more than Macs. One of the other big differences between the two is that PCs have way more software and hardware options than Macs do. Even if I favored Macs over PCs in terms of usage, the availability and selection of PC products vs Mac products would likely still keep me in the PC world. And yes, just because one or more of you may have a huge Mac store 3 blocks from your house doesn't mean the rest of us do. Availability for Mac products vs PC products IS scarce.

We'll see what happens with this whole "Mac: Intel inside" deal and other related news.

yea, i know...i just wasnt going to go out and buy one, only to end up giving it to the school.

also, as for security...its YOUR responsibility as the owner of the machine to make sure you are safe from threats. although the world of viruses is, well...spreading like a virus, you shouldnt be faced with the ultimatum of formatting hdds, installing all kinds of scanners to get rid of your junk, etc. granted, much of the stuff out there is all small stuff, you should still keep a keen eye on what websites you click on, what you download, what programs you install, and so on.
