Magic Jack

I was thinking of getting one. I know that they are going to soon be able to port numbers for a nominal fee. But, AT&T will give me a hard time to port my number over. Just like they did with Vonage. The only thing I don't like about it is that you have to keep your computer on when you are making calls. I am sort of curious how the voice quality is. Other then that it doesn't look bad at all. For $20/year, it looks like a really good bargain. This could drive Vonage and other VOIP carriers out of business.

I got one! :D We just got it the other day. When talking to others, they sound crystal clear but you hear a bit of a bip after every word you say.

To solve the computer being on issue, I resurrected an older computer and plugged in a wireless card and the magic jack. When we are able to port our number over, that computer will remain on at all times (no monitor, keyboard, etc. - just tower, magic jack, wireless card and power line) in the basement on top of the freezer. We will plug the main line into the magic jack and it will go all throughout the house.

It's nice to finally have call waiting! And when you put people on hold, there's music! :D

Cool, there's music. I always wanted to have that feature.:) I am glad it sounds clear. I am sure that bit of bip will go away soon. I am now thinking of buying one and just going with Comcast for internet. It would be so nice to pay only $20/year for phone service. That is not a bad idea to put a tower like downstairs and plug in a expandable phone system. I have an old imac laying around, maybe I can finally put it to good use. Can you customize what music you want when you put people on hold?

Not that I know of. I didn't even select it. I just placed someone on hold and they said there was music. I tried it and it's basic music.

That's still really cool. Did you have to install any software or drivers along with the magicjack? Would you say the quality is probably the same as Vonage or another VOIP carrier?

I have one and its great. Get one of those cordless phones with the other handsets and there is your whole phone line!

You plug in the magicjack and it installs drivers automatically. All that comes in the package is an extension cable (mine is defective so I'm using the one that came with my wireless adapter instead and that works.) If the software doesn't install/download by itself, you just click on the drive letter it is under or go to the magicjack site and download the software. Mind you the software must also run in order to make calls - you can't just have your computer on. Just be sure to have it autorun when you log on. (Bad thing is there is no option in the settings to do that - you have to drag it to the startup folder manually.)

I've never used any other VoIP service so I can't compare sound quality.

The other cool part about the magicjack is it has a side window with a blue LED :D
