magnet question

I often use screwdrivers with magnetic tips to take my rig apart. I take an EET class in college and was told this was not advisable due to possible damage. From experience, does this hold true for anyone? I myself have not had any negative results.

Personally I don't think the magnetic tip of a screwdriver would be powerful enough to effect anything... I mean some people might not use them just as a precaution, but I doubt that it would make a difference. I always use magnetic screw drivers as everytime, without fail, I drop screws in places that are very hard to get to.

Yeah, I can't see it being powerful enough magnet to make a difference. Maybe some kind of industrial grade screwdriver would be lol, but for the most part, I see it as one of those things that only those who are extra careful follow.

I've built many systems with a magnetic-tipped screwdriver with no damage. The magnetism is made to be just strong enough to hold a screw but hardly anything else so it is pretty harmless. Besides, what parts are magnet sensitive? I would assume the transistors and stuff on a motherboard wouldn't be affected by magnetism. The CPU maybe, a hard drive, yeah, but you would have to have the screwdriver inside the HDD to have an actual effect.

Yeah the magnetic force just wouldn't be powerful enough to effect anything. If there's one thing I love, its the magnets you get out of a hard drive though. They were the strongest I have ever come across. :)
