Magnets & CRTs

How long does a magnet need to be near a CRT to make permanent damage? How far awar does it have to be? Is there any way to reverse the damage?

Depending on the size of the magnet, it can only take a minute. The effects are irreverisble, so don't do it if you want to keep it, otherwise, if it's for a quick couple of seconds, it could wear off anywhere from a couple of mintues to a day or so. As for how far away, it can be within 6 inches (again, depending on the size of the magnet.

becasue of the magnets working inside the monitor. heres an interesting idea about how to fix it, and it seems to work, although i wouldnt recommend it unless in dire need:

im not sure, but i think this is similar to degauss.

not exactly, thats what the degauss button is for (yes, it does have a purpose), if its a small magnet, you should be able to clear the mark left by it just by pressing the button. However i tried this once using a car speaker, and it cleared the first time, but the second time it stayed. Although it does fade, now you can hardly see it.

np, here to help :)

i made the mistake of setting my old 12 inch monitor ontop of my sealed sub box, and lets just say it was better then a christmas tree :D a few swipes with a little speaker (as in passing it left to right/right to left) and it was ok, but i gotta try the drill thingy.... now wheres my magnet...

if you want to see something really funny.. you should put the crt monitor on the side and when turned on :)
all the colours are going nuts, because the magnets inside the monitor were not designed to have the Gravity force from the side. ( dont worry, that isnt permanent ;) )

...I was a computer [at work] and found a huge magnet (size of a big fist), and you know they say 'Never give a child matches'. Well I kind of swiped the magnet passed the crt and it messed the screen up.

So depending on the size and quality of the magnet, it won't take long (XP is for experience :P )

Degaussing rulez!
BTW, don't store your floppies (or other magnetic media supports) near the monitor. They won't damage the monitor, just the data from them will have a shorter lifetime.
