Maintenance to keep computer running fast?

What are some things I should do to keep my computer running fast, and how often should I do them?
 
Running your antivirus program once a week.

Running an antimalware program every few days, Malwarebytes or Superantispyware.

Running Ccleaner once a week.

Defragging your hard drive every couple months.

Uninstall any programs you don't use.

Only have programs running at bootup that are necessary.
 
The only thing I have to add is that every month or so you should clean it out. Literally, as in open the case and blow out the dust and such.

Also, you may want to reinstall the OS every other year or so, because eventually it will get clogged up.

Hit start, run, type msconfig, hit enter.

Then, hit the startup tab, and disable what you don't need. Typically, you don't need much, just your antivirus software.

Also, hit the services tab, then check the "hide all microsoft services", then you can disable all of the ones that are left.

We can help you to find what you need, if you need further help.

thankyou I just downloaded CCcleaner so i will be using that! and disabled A LOT of programs running at boot up except avast
 
WOW, just did all the suggested things, and I can tell a big difference, my computer was fast before, but now its extremely fast.
 
Quick question...

You said to enable all the services as well except my avast, well I did that, but when I restart all the services are up and running again...do I just do this every time I start the computer up?

EDIT: NVM I was looking at the Microsoft services...
 
He said to disable services that weren't microsoft, but you have to be careful because some services are required by programs to work correctly.
 
the laptop is much harder to get right haha...i did the exact same thing on my laptop that i did on my desktop in MSCONFIG and the wifi isnt working now, trying to find which startup or service it is I need to turn back on
 
Go back into msconfig and recheck everything. Then reboot your system and then post a hijackthis log so i can see whats running and i'll tell you what to fix.

Please download and post a log with HiJackThis.

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

thanks a lot! so i should keep all that stuff checked under services and startup? there are a lot more checked items than on my desktop, my desktop only has antivirus stuff checked, everything else is unchecked, hope thats ok.

What he is telling you to hit in the hijack this, will actually remove it from startup, so it is basically unchecking it for you.

As long as everything is working fine, it is fine that you only have antivirus enabled.

yea i know, my laptop has little utilities though that need to be on startup (mouse sensitivity adjuster, volume, remove safely arrow thing, ati screen resolution, etc), and I think he nailed the ones I need. My desktop doesnt have all those little utilities.
