Major Dilemma

Hi. I'm new to this forum and this question has probably been asked a million times so please excuse me. I'm a grad student working on a midterm paper and of all times, my pc goes and starts acting up. The only thing that my family and I do is e-mail, internet, photo-editing, and I like to use it as my stereo. I don't know if I should by a new computer. I have a Dell dimension XPS8300.

What is the best PC manufacturer out there for desktop pc's?

Umm...well, depends on your budget. Generally just stay away from Emachines and Dell's, they both are pretty bad. What's your budget? If you don't want to build your own computer, your best bet is to find some HP, Gateway etc pre-built computer.

i'd say buy parts and if you're not comfortable putting it together ( you should be fine tho) take it to best buy or something and have them put it together. You'd be able to have a way better computer instead of one of the major box ones.

Right now I would have to say HP (I will flog myself in the morning for saying it). Gateway and Dell are trash right now. Along with Compaq and Acer.

Then of course there is always building it yourself. You will get a lot more for your money that way, and get exactly what you want/need.

Hating Dell is teh new hotness, it seems. Everyone's doing it. I'm not sure why - maybe so people can fit in with others? Dell has great service (Phone and Live online support), many many years of history, and attractive products (if not a bit warm, but if you know the absolute basics about computers, you can increase the airflow) using decent components for a very reasonable pre-assembled price.

I'm going to be in the market for a new laptop in the upcoming months and I'm going to get a Dell just to piss off half the forums :D Seriously though, I'll be looking at no less than 5 models, and at least 3 will be Dell.

The following is from the BBB.
Government Actions
On May 16, 2007, the New York Attorney General's Office filed a lawsuit against Dell and Dell Financial Services, LP ("DFS"), an affiliate that is a joint venture between Dell and CIT Bank, which offers financing to consumers for their Dell purchases. The lawsuit accuses Dell and DFS of engaging in "bait and switch" financing tactics and failing to provide their customers with adequate customer service. It also charges Dell and DFS with perpetuating other deceptive business practices relating to their technical support services, promotional financing, rebate offers, and billing and collection activity. The matter is pending.

My point is, Dell Sucks! If you choose to believe they don't, then go ahead and buy one. See for your self, you MIGHT get lucky.

I'm the only person in my immediate family and my wife's immediate family that built their own and does not use a Dell. over the years, probably 8 systems total for various people/reasons and every single one stable. I actually breathed new life into 1997 Inspiron 7000 back in 2002 when my wife bought a newer model and continued to use it for 3 more years. I'm sorry people have had bad experiences with their products in the past.

I recently had a very bad Intel experience. I suppose they suck as well

Gods, what the hell is it with these 'I am right, you are wrong' post lately? Just because some people have a negative experience doesn't mean the product sucks. Windows *is* still around after all...

Hell, I suppose I'm a Dell 'fanboy' too now...

Recently, Dell began selling their computers through retailers. They managed to stay profitable for many years without third party distribution. Much of that success is due to word of mouth advertising.

They're also one of the first big manufacturers - if not the first - to allow customers to use Linux. That's good customer service, IMO. Indeed, you'll find negative reviews w/ HP, Sony, and the rest. I will definitely consider a Dell when I buy a laptop. I will never buy a desktop for obvious reasons.

I'm not suprised that their financing unit is under investigation. In the financing area, all the companies' are crooks and they all use the same tactics. Cash is king.

Yeah, if you finally get to someone who speaks English. The market even reflects Dell's recent terrible performance. I mean their laptop batteries literally spontaneously combusted, resulting in a massive recall. Sure, you can blame sony, but Dell is ultimately responsible for their end products. While I hold nothing against you (as everyone is entitled to their opinion), I don't hold a high regard for Dell.
