Major registry problem

I know little about computers so sorry if I get the terms wrong...

I got a virus. I got rid of the virus. It messed up the file association with everything. From what I've learned, it has to do with the .exe file missing, or something. My computer won't let me download anything so I got an exeFix file by saving it in notepad. I opened it and it says, "Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes."

I opened it in safe mode and tried it again and it gave the same message. I don't want to just start deleting processes so what do I do now? Remember, I can't download anything.

Thanks!

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and see if you can download anything that way. (Right after you turn on the computer, begin pressing F8 repeatedly until a black-and-white screen comes up with several options - choose "Safe Mode with Networking")

If so, download and run rkill.exe (if you can't run .exe files, download one of the others), then download and install Malwarebytes Antimalware, run a scan and remove anything it finds.

Then reboot the computer back into Safe Mode with Networking, and download and run CCleaner - click on the Registry button on the left, then click "Scan for Issues," let it scan, then click "Fix Selected Issues" (no need to save a log file) Then click "Scan for Issues" again and repeat this process as many times as it takes until no more issues are found.

Finally, download and run HijackThis!, post your logfile back here, and wait on orders ;).

Alternatively, you could boot with your Windows CD and try to Repair the installation. Not sure if that would work or not...

Another option would be to backup your personal files and do a complete format of the HDD and reinstall Windows. Sometimes that's the best way to go when a system is really "messed up"

Are you sure you are totally clean? Try doing this....Download rkill.scr from this website. It's the third link under downloads.

After downloading, please run the program and it should find any active infections that may be stopping you from running any exe files. After doing so, try running any exe programs and let me know it works. If so, then you need to download and run malwarebytes antimalware from here.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If you continue to experience problems after doing this, please post a HijackThis log by doing the following:

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log
