Making a Website

I want to create a website just for fun.

I have Macromedia Dreamweaver, Flash, and FireWorks so I have the software to create it. Although I have 0 clue how to use Dreamweaver.

Questions:

1. I want to buy a domain from www.1and1.com, host it off my dad's server and then use Dreamweaver to create it. What is needed to do that?

2. If I buy a hosted domain from 1and1 can I still use Dreamweaver to make it, except it is on their server?

3. Is their any benefit to hosting off of your own server?

4. What is MS hosting?

I dont know why you want to buy a domain. You are a beginner. so save the files on your computer and test it on you computer.
whenever you want to publish and share you site then buy a domain. when you wand to give or get informations.
if you want to learn basic of web design go to: http://www.w3schools.com/
self dreamweaver has got a super useful help and tutorials for free. dreamweaver is just best and very very easy to work with.
if your must use php or asp then use Wamp(windows ), lamp(linux), mamp(Mac).
if i were you i wouldnt buy a domain.

I prefer to buy a domain since there cheap enough, but if you were to but it on your dads server you could get a free domain from dyndns.com/(you dont get a .com address or anything but its not bad for a freebie) the advantanges of self hosting are you dont have to FTP or upload any files you just simply drop the files into the folder you are using. Wamp 5 is one of the easiest softwares to use to setup a server.

Dreamweaver or Frontpage would be to good softwares to use for beginers to web design althought I do prefer to write out scripts for webpages myself. If you dont know how to use dreamweaver just mess around for a bit and get used to using it for a bit first same thing applys for Frontpage. hope this is useful to you and good look on building the webpage and if you need any help dont hesitate PM me. s_m_w_d

This was very helpful, but wat does the FTP allow for?

I have been building some stuff with Dreamweaver and saving it to the comp. The only problem is that I cant view my work so far because you have to view it in IE or Firefox and it doesnt work.

Are you coding or designing? Make sure you save before previewing, and if F12 doesn't work, just find where you saved your document and view it from there :).

I am designing, its all saved and it still says it was unable to connect.

If I find where I saved it, it just opens it up in Dreamweaver and I am back to where I started.

I'm personally a webmater of a website made with Flash...
www.benjidela.com and www.mtbpassion.benjidela.com

Flash is hard to learn but really cool when you know how to use it... I recommend you buy a book on HTML/ JAVASCRIPT (or PHP) and one for Flash and then learn...That's the only way to learn and that's how I did it... :D

Good luck.

My host is Hostingplex, (i think it's hostingplex.com) and I bought a pack with 5GB Space and a domain name (that is actually from Liberty Names).

Yahoo offers Domain name...I use to have one.

Hostingplex is the best I found on internet for a website like mine. If you have any question, please ask :D

When you buy a domain you will need to set it up so that the nameservers point to that of your dad's server, and on his server you will have to setup the domain so the server knows what to do with it.
2. If I buy a hosted domain from 1and1 can I still use Dreamweaver to make it, except it is on their server?
I'm not sure what you mean by hosted domain, but if your dad has his own server then all you will need is a domain, as i said before you will set that up to point to your dads server, and then when you go to that domain the server will process any documents in the directory the domain is pointed to, you will just need to setup an FTP account to allow you to access that folder, and then in dreamweaver you can connect to there and it will act just like a folder on your HDD
3. Is their any benefit to hosting off of your own server?
Not really sure what you mean by this, do you mean is a dedicated server better than shared hosting? If so then generally yes, although if your website only receives a few visitors per day then there is not really much point spending much more money on your own server, when you can get shared hosting for under $10 per month
4. What is MS hosting?
MS Hosting is where the server runs MS Windows (Most likely to be windows server) This is generally more expensive as other server run linux, which is free in most cases. An advantage of MS hosting is that you have ASP scripting, altohugh in many cases do not have PHP or MySQL. I would reccomend linux over the 2, as it is usually cheaper and PHP & MySQL are more widely used if you want to install any scripts, such as a forum

Thanks for the help, I prolly wont be getting any hits at all so I might just stick with a shared domain.

Dreamweaver is a programm that allows you to create .html, .php .xml etc files. When you go on a website, for exemple mine, the browser looks for the file index.html and shows it to you.
If I want, I can use dreamweaver to make my website or other programms, it doesn't matter. What matters is if your host allows .php scripts (some don't but most do) if you're coding in PHP.

For the domain name, all you need to do is set up the DNS as Lee explained so that it points to your dad's server.

Webbenji :D
