I am running XP-Pro on an old HP nc4400 laptop. I just ac
uired a malware that I have seen before but cant remember what was done to get rid of it. It has taken over. No apps can be launched. It you try then a window pops up and states XP Internet Securiity 2012 has blocked a program from accessing the internet. I tried running malwarebytes in safemode but the window pops up there as well. I can launch avast antivirus and it comleted a scan. It detected a virus and stashed it,b ut still have the same problem. Can someone advise?

please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com but DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.

You can also try running one of these files, same rkill just named differently.

After running rkill then you can open malwarebytes, update it and then run a quick scan to kill the infection.

Thanks so much for your help. It seems that after one of the rk apps in downloaded, as soon as I try to install then it blocks the install with another pop up window.

Either keep running it succession or run the iexplore or explorer file. Running it succession will eventually overpower the infection and temporarily kill it. It may also help to boot to safe mode and run it as well.

I continued to try but the infection blocked all installs. I remembered that I have combofix on a flash drive. I ran this and it fixed the infection. I was then able to run malwarebytes and then spybot. All is now cleaned and running good. Thanks for your help. Rick
