Hi
I seem to have the mother of all infections. Spybot registered 320different issues and my antivirus software has picked up loads. Sorry not to be too specific but there really are so many of them. Extra toolbars, freezing IE7, etc etc. Spybot freezes too when it tries to clean up but they just seem to come back. In particular something in Windows\assembly .. W32/Agent.NM.

I've run the Hijack this application and post the results here. If anyone can offer any help i'd be forever grateful

This is a mess. It might take a few posts to get everything.
Go to Add\Remove programs and uninstall Whenusearch, SaveNow and anything else you didn't install.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Download AVG Antispyware.
http://downloads.grisoft.cz/softw/70/filedir/inst/avgas-setup-7.5.0.50.exe
Install the program and check for updates, but don't run a scan yet.

Download Smitfraudfix.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Unzip the program to the desktop.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, run a complete scan with AVG Antispyware. When the scan has finished, select "delete" as the action and save the report.

Then open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log, and the AVG report.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Hi,
Just to let you know I am doing as you suggested but its taking forever.

Seems i have a monster infection courtesy of winantiviruspro2006 (which i now understand itself to be malware of some sort).

AVG Anti Spyware has been running for 2 hours now. Its scanned 185,000 objects of which 18,000+ are infected objects. They seem to be in a folder called C:\Documents and Settings\Simon\Complete\various porn-named files.

The words go off the page so I cant see if these are .jpg files or whatever, but what's really odd is that I don't have a folder called \Complete.

At this rate the scan is going to take another 24 hours to run. Should I let it do this or is there some way I can find this \Complete folder and quickly delete it?

I'm happy to let it run, but if there's a faster way can you let me know thanks.

OK what i did in the end was to abandon the AVG Antispyware scan temporarily because it was finding thousands of infected objects all in the one folder hidden as a System Folder called 'Complete'. I calculated it would take at least 24 hours to carry on running so in the end I aborted the scan and manually deleted the 'Complete' folder which had thousands of porn description .zip files in (it actually occurred twice for 2 usernames). I then went back to the AVG Antispyware scan and completed that. This found 600+ infected items.

The good news is I think they are all deleted now, I ran Smitfraud too and a new HiJack log that I'll post here. I havent included the AVG report file of the 'Complete' folder because it grew to 16MB and this post is limited in the size it can be and it wouldnt let me paste it.

btw, i did spot an entry in the avg log called rootkit.agent.af, but I dont know if thats gone or not.

Look forward to your next instructions and thanks for the help so far.

(Should I clear out the System Restore files btw??)

That looks a lot better. I came across that "complete" folder a while ago when I was cleaning my sister's comp. You can flush your restore points when you're clean.
It was lucky you mentioned AVG finding a possible rootkit (it's why I always ask to see the log, as it'll often flag a part of one).

Download Blacklight and run a scan. Post the results.

Hi again,

Does the HijackThis log I posted yesterday look OK now?

Also, I've since run a full virus scan again and its picked up 2 files in the \Windows\System32 folder called jegycgn.dll and wsvkgak.dll. Can I simply delete these safely, or do I have to do something else to stop them coming back?

Finally, I'm worried about rootkits since I saw a reference to one when I ran AVG Antispyware.

Sorry our posts crossed, I missed your comments above. Im running the Blacklight app now and will post the results.

Thanks.

Hi again,

Blacklight didnt find anything suspicious but i know AVG AntiSpyware picked up Rootkit.Agent.af but Im guessing it managed to get rid of it.

Hopefully, we're done except is it OK to delete those 2 .dll files in \System32 I mentioned above?

Thanks

Delete those 2 files, then restart and post a new Hijackthis log, just a bit of cleaning up to do :)

The 2 files are now deleted successfully. Had to go into safe mode to do it but it worked in the end. I suppose not too unexpectedly, when i rebooted i got a RunDLL error message saying it couldnt load one of the files i deleted since it couldnt be found. So, I'm guessing part of the clean up is to get rid of the run command.

Anyway, here is the latest log as you requested, and i'll wait for you with your far greater grasp of this to steer me to the finish line (i see theres several lines with 'file missing' which i imagine need deleting but i'm still out of my depth!). Thanks again for all your help.

This should take care of that message you get on startup. You also need to update java.

Run Hijackthis and select "Do a system scan only", place a check by the following entries.

Here's the latest HiJackThis log. I think its nailed now except i have one question about this entry:

O16 - DPF: {E53458D2-5A83-4BD1-8DE2-EEEBE73BAB77} - http://dinet.info/e/us22/e.cab

Any idea what it is since it was with a load of other O16 entries that you said to delete, but you didnt say to delete this one. It looks like it will try to d/l a file called e.cab?

Thanks again.

Sorry to pester but I'm so nearly complete with mending our PC and I just need a yes or no to the question I asked in my previous post. Basically, there's an entry left:

O16 - DPF: {E53458D2-5A83-4BD1-8DE2-EEEBE73BAB77} - http://dinet.info/e/us22/e.cab

.. and I need to know if I should delete it or not before letting my PC loose on the internet. It seems to want to d/l a file called e.cab and I'm paranoid I'll reintroduce the malware back on the machine if I connect to the internet without first checking if I need this registry entry or if I can get rid of it. (I'm on a different machine right now).

Thanks again.

I haven't been around much lately, you can fix that entry if you like, I don't think it's bad but getting rid of it won't hurt, the log looks good otherwise :)

Well, in the end I took what I thought was a small risk and downloaded the e.cab file to which that link pointed and scanned it. Guess what, it contained Trojan.Agent.rx. So I've removed that registry ref and deleted totally the e.cab file.

Thanks for all your help btw. I don't know how you find the time but I'm glad you were around :)
