I am moving to a house built in 83. Very nice but since close, I have been over daily for a week now and have noticed it was hiding a dark secret. Every time a storm rolls through, the house is hit with large rolling brownouts. Im in the SE and afternoon thunderstorms are just about a daily issue in the summer. They are not just quick dims. The lights flicker, get dimmer and it stays that way for several seconds. Ive never seen anything like it. I get an occasional blackout where I live now but brownouts are rare. Picture movies where you see people in cheap housing in the northeast and a train on an elevated rail goes by except without the shaking.
I don't know what to do. I don't want my computer to die. I just lost an old monitor to a brownout where I live now.
I have a nice surge protector but from reading into this, surge protectors do what their name suggests. A surge is a spike. They don't store power and even if they did for a split second, I dont think they would last through one of these.
I have considered getting a UPS. APC Back-UPS ES 8 Outlet 550VA 120V. 1 for my tower and one for my tivo in my entertainment center. My monitor, printer, speakers can do without as all are cheap and/or very old.
I asked my IT guy at work and he said a surge protector works for him. He said I can look into power conditioners but those get expensive.
