my motherboard only has one FDD connector, thats it. the rest of the connectors are SATA. I tried connecting both my hard drive and DVD drive both up to the FDD (master and slave). And only one of them will work like that. I can connect just my DVD drive, or just my hard drive for them to work. the problem is i need to install all the new driver cds and etc. so am i just gonna have to buy a SATA DVD drive?

it is the other connection not slave or master. look for cs on the hard drive or cable slect

well see the probelm is i only have one FDD connector and need to plug in both my DVD drive and HD. so i can only use one cable, with 2 connectors

yeah that will work. so you have the 2 connections on one port? if not there is a cable that will work for that

no not two connectors on one port, i hooked up a cable that came with my mobo, it just has two seperate connectors, one in the middle and one on each end. and this cable is connected to my one FDD port.

ya so you can connect both to the cable.
so you would have something like this

motherboard|-------|hd (cable slect)|---------|cd drive (cable slect)|

Its a IDE port not a FFD port, you cant run a Harddrive and cd-rom on a FFD floppy port, the cables dont match anyway. It should run as master and slave, some boards like to have the master on the end of the cable with the slave in the middle. Plus you might need to check in your bios to make sure that the Primary and secondary is enabled on your IDE port, if one disabled it will only pick up one drive.

if what stranglehold does not work, cable slect is like this

on the back.

: : : '

where the first one may be master and the other is slave so put the jumper on the other.

so it is possible to have a DVD drive and an HD drive on the same IDE port?

ok i googled "cable select" and one site said that "Unfortunately, regular 40-conductor IDE/ATA cables don't support cable select." meaning i need to purchase a special cable select cable.
