The largest size for a PC133 simm was 256mb. I maxed one board with three of those on one old build. Often you may see something that looks like it could have something else there due to a manufacturer using the same board altered for a different model with different features.

Than why do I currently have a 512MB SDRAM PC133 stick in my old PIII computer,

That's total bullcrap. I have a system running with 4 512MB sticks=2GB of PC133.

What do you don't realize is that later model board saw an increased capacity just before the first models using dimms not simms were available. One Shuttle board around that time saw a three PC133 256mb simm max. Other boards maxed at 512mb. It doesn't take that much to figure out when simply taking a look at the newer boards out with some seeing 4gb while others see 8gb or 16gb even with DDR2.
