Hey i was just messing around with utorrent and looking at all the options and was wondering if anyone could explain to me what the difference between global maximum number of connections and maximum number of connected peers per torrent means.

The legality of torrents itself is questionable. So i dont think this is the right place to discuss about this.

If u really wanna know, go for google.

So long as you're not trying to download or seek advice regarding the illegal download of copyrighted material, this thread is okay. Torrent technology, by itself, is okay to discuss here.

The legality of torrents is not in question. The use of BitTorrent programs and torrents themselves is perfectly legal. Some people choose to share copyrighted material which is illegal in some countries. Torrents are becoming an ever more popular form of distributing the Linux OS as well many other free and open source programs. Many unsigned bands are also using torrents as a way to distribute their music. There are whole archives of non copyrighted or out of copyrighted works available via torrents. Mainstream media like FOX, Lionsgate, MTV etc are also using BitTorrent to distribute their works. Now that that is settled.

Now I'm not naive and I know a good portion of torrent traffic is copyrighted works and illegal buy USA law. But this is a question about the basics of how the technology works.

Maximum number of connected peers per torrent is the number of people connecting to each individual torrent say of Ubuntu 8.10.

Global maximum number of connections is the total number of connections that can be made for all your torrents say Ubuntu 8.10, some crappy unsigned band and George Romeo's original Night of The Living Dead (which he released into public domain).

You can check Wikipedia or the official BitTorrent site at www.bittorrent.com for more info and how you can download movies and music legally.

We'll use US law as a basis here and your account will be banned if the mod team determines that you've violated the rules. Use some common sense and don't push the issue. ;)

Yes as I said torrents aren't illegal just the way some people use them. Just as in driving down the highway is not illegal just the way some people do it is, speeders and drug dealers for expample. Quite frankly it would be a bigger loss to the forums then it would be to me if I were banned. It's just the internet and there are thousands of forums like this one.

You're a valued member and no one wants to see you banned. All I ask is, when discussing torrents, don't post anything related to obtaining or sharing pirated material. I apologize if my previous post was a bit harsh.

With the MPAA and RIAA suing like crazy I certainly understand how it may be best to avoid a large part or BitTorrenting debate. It's really a shame that it's the case since BitTorrent is a great way to distribute content. I would like to note I pointed out nothing but legal torrents so unlike the MPAA and RIAA would like people to believe it's not just used for piracy. Hell if they had their way the internet and computers would be banned since they can be used for priacy. In the future I will stay away from torrent topics so as not to repete any missunderstandings or tread to deeply into grey areas. You are the mods and what you say does go.
