ok im not sure if this is in the right section or not but here is my problem:

i have a dell monitor that has a max res of 1024x 768, and i have a gateway monitor that has a max res of 1024x 1280. ok, when i start up my computer with the dell notior plugged in, it says i only can go up to 1024x 768. but, if i start up the computer with the gateway monitor plugged in, it says i can go up to 1280x 1024. but, when i unplug the gateway monitor and plug the dell monitor in, it allows me to have a resolution of 1280x 1024. so, i know that the dell monitor is capable of displaying 1280x 1024, so i was wondering if there is some way to allow the dell monitor to exceed its specified max res.

It could be that display properties has not recognised that a different monitor has been plugged in. It is extremely unlikely that the Dell monitor will be able to exceed its stated specs.

The only way to find out for sure it to try it. Select the new resolution, click apply. If the monitor complains about the signal being out of range, and goes blank/fuzzy, then wait 15s and the previous resolution will be reverted.
