max upgrade on old machine

i have an old machine i want to upgrade as much as possible. it's a HP Pavilion PC Model 4550Z. it has a 466mhz celly cpu with a 66mhz fsb.

i've found a few cpu's on ebay for way cheap, i just wanna make sure they're compatible. i've found a 566mhz, a 600mhz, a 633mhz, and a 700mhz all with the 66mhz fsb.

the voltages are different though, and i'm not sure if they will work. i didn't see any way to change voltages in the bios. will it autodetect? anyone know what the max i can put in there?

i'm also putting a radeon 9550, a sound blaster live card, and a dvd burner. this will be for my daughter, and i want to make it the best i can.

The voltage should be fine, just as long as the processor's not too know for the board. That's probably a Socket 370, but you could always run CPUz to double check... You probably should anway to get the chipset. It might give some insight as to what the max processor would be. They have PIII 1.4GHz processors for S370, but I doubt that'd work in that machine :P

May I ask why? You know you can buy a prebuilt PC which is way all around better for 400 dollars or under? I mean even if you only spend 200 upgrading it, why not just spend another 150ish and get a whole new rig?

Then use your old one to use linux or something else.

this pc is already complete, up and running on my router right now. i maxed the ram out (a whopping 256mb), the sound and video cards were old parts from old upgrades. ebay has these old s370 celly's for cheap. a 700mhz cpu for less than $20. if it works that is. i'm not really trying to put any cash into it, but $20 for a jump from 466 to 700 is pretty reasonable.

it's just the 466 runs on 1.5v, and the 700 runs on 1.65 (theres a 566 with the same 1.5v requirements, but i'd like to get the faster one if i could). there's nowhere in the bios to change cpu voltage. will it autodetect? will it run at a slower speed? will it run at all?

no HP has the bios pretty locked down with their own. If you could find out who made the board and what model of motherboard it really is, you could try flashing it with their bios and see if you can change the voltage multiplier

cpu-z doesn't tell me the board manufacturer or model. it's just grayed out. i do know the core voltage is 2v for this particular chip. if i put a chip in that takes 1.7v, think i'll fry it? if so, i'm stuck upgrading from the 466 to a 533 for $20. will that even be noticeable?
