i have a new Maxtor 120gb hard drive brand new and when i try to install windows xp on it at the last step i get a blue screen its driving me crazy please help.

I think your HDD is probably faulty eventhough it is new, try to take it back to where you bought it and exchange it for another.

Is this a SATA hard drive? If it is, you most likely have to press f6 at the beginning of XP install to install the SATA controller driver for the system to see the hard drive. This is usually what happens when you use a SATA hard drive on an older chipset.

According to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315335 this error while installing XP is due to bad RAM or the RAM configuration isn't compatible with XP. That being the case, bad RAM is the most likely cause. If you have 2 sticks of RAM remove one and try to install XP again, if it still happens swap sticks of RAM and try again.

If you've only got 1 stick of RAM return it for a new one.
