I found a great deal (119.00 shipped) for the 500 GB Maxtor One Touch T01H500 External HD but have read some revies that it is junk that spening a little more money on a Seagate is well worth it.

Any thoughts before I stick my entire home movies collection on a hard drive?

maxtor is owned by seagate, therefore those reviews are stupid. i have a 350GB maxtor onetouch II and it's fantastic, it's lasted me for quite a while and is still going strong.

I have a 500Gb Western Digital My Book Essential and we use the same drives, the My Book, at work. And we store over 3-5Tb of pics... I had a 320Gb Maxtor fail on me and it about cost me my job, and I lost over 250Gb in pics and there were 10 orders for those pictures. Luckily they were backed up on a My Book :) I don't like any Maxtor HDD, and will not touch one, but I love Western Digital drives. The drive below is not at all slow, it is just as quick as my internal SATA drive.

Try this one

Thanks, I have been cheking out that mybook WD and the Seagate Freeagent pro.

I like to Seagate due to the 5 year warranty but Amazon has that 500gb my book WD for 149.99 with free ship.

About long can I expect data (movies, music) to last on either one of these HD's?

I have over 200 disks of video so I am thinking that a 750 gb or bigger would be better.

I really can't give you an estimate of how long... But, it does sound like you need a 750Gb - 1Tb HDD...

how do you know the reviews didn't come from before seagate bought maxtor?
they didn't own them forever and the fact that seagate bought maxtor (only happened during this year) doesn't suddenly mean maxtor's past hard drives and equipment is suddenly as good as seagates.

if its hardware that was released before seagate bought maxtor, i'd trust the reviews still.
but even then, it all depends on how much you use it and the environment you use it in.
if you only have it on once a week for a few hours, then it'll last a lot longer then if its on 24/7.
if you use it in an area thats 70 degrees and 40% humidity, it'll last a lot longer then in an area thats 95 degrees and 90% humidity

on a side note, you can get a 500 gb seagate hard drive and cheap usb case for around $120 total from newegg

Once I get all my video on the drive, and burn some backup disks also, the drive will only be used 0-2 hours per week and the room it is in is always around 65-70 degrees.

Have any of you ever bought from eBay? I found a Western Digital My Book 750 GB for 135.00 + 13.00 ship.

He has 9 avalible and they are factroy sealed, he has 55 rating, all being positive. What do you think? Would you go for it?

If that's the guy you mentioned in the other thread, like I mentioned there the alarm bells are going off. The model number he lists isn't even mentioned on WD's site, he's been all over the place trying to sell them, starting at $200, and apart from a couple of nobody photo sites, there is absolutely no mention of them save for on Russian sites.

I have a hunch they're not legitimate product.
