Maxtor Space?

I have a Maxtor OneTouch portable hard drive,it says 320 on the package but when it's hooked up to the computer it reads a total of 298.
I only wanted it for photo storage so I formatted it and it says 297 free 298.

Where did the other 20+ gig of free space go?

Is it even there?

Thanks,

After you format a drive thats what happens to the space. And between in computer terms what a gigabyte is and what a hard drive determines what a gigabyte is, is different measurements.

This is because the hard drive manufacturers say a gigabyte is 1000 megabytes, and 1 megabyte is 1000 kilobytes, rather than 1024 like windows reads it.

So the size you have after formatting is normal.
