I'm still using an 80Gb Maxtor DiamondMax 9+, and this thing is like 4 or 5 years old. No problems here, but I am going to replace it with a WD Caviar RE2 500Gb cause I could use the extra storage space and the IDE cable is always in the way and making airflow and cable management worse.
I have noticed that the maxtor versions with 20-120 GB are pretty good actually. But when they started to build those SATA versions, especially the 320GB (or was it the 250GB), it began to fall apart. I know a lot of guys who bought those, and got an error. But... Didn't Seagate bought Maxtor? Does it mean that their technique will merge? Or did they just bought them and did nothing with it ?
They bought out the corporate side while the same tooling, materials, drive designers, and production workers are mainly still present. Besides taking over one compeditors product line you might actually see some improvement(much needed ) over an extended period of time while not topping their original products.
It seems that Maxtor has always had problems with the larger capacity since the 250s or 320s tend to fly apart as well as when their 16gb model was the largest sold years back. The Seagate people are loving that since it certainly makes look any drive with the Seagate name look far better.
