i sent back a bad drive to maxtor and they are replacing it for me. have any off you guys done this and had any problems. the guy i talked to on the phone told me i should recieve it within 2-3days after they get my bad drive. i was just wanting to know if they had told any off you guys this and you had to end up waiting a month or two?

Most of these companies are pretty good about these warranty replacement issues... I haven't dealt with Maxtor in particular, but know others that have and have seemed pleased with their response time...
 
A couple of years ago, Maxtor shaved their warranty down from three years to one, and at the same time, introduced a bunch of crappy drives. Result: lost a lot of money replacing drives and got bought out by Seagate late last year. Moral of the story: Maxtor isn't as good as they used to be, not by a long shot. Next time, buy a Seagate:)

I just switched from Maxtor IDE to Seagate SATA drives.

Glad I saw this thread. Makes me feel like I wasn't wasting my money on the SATA drives.

I pretty new to building and modifying computers.

No matter how much research you do, or how many reviews you read about a product--I'm always worried that I might be buying a turd.

Nobody told me Maxtor drives were prone to sudden failures. The local retail shops all had GREAT things to say about them. Of course, they don't care if your system crashes. They just want to sell you a HDD.

I had to do a bunch of reading, here and other places before I discovered the problems with Maxtor and their lack of QC lately.

Thats what made me switch to the Seagate drives. They have excelent reviews, and I know a couple people locally who have been using them without problems.
