MB only sees half my 1Gb stick????

Hi guys, a friend bought some memory to go in his snail of a computer. It was 1Gb of PC2700. His computer wouldn't boot up at all. The crucial website reckoned that it would be OK but I guess they were wrong.

Anyway, I brought the stick home being pretty sure it would run on my Epox 8K5A3+ without issues. The result was that the MB only counts up half of it on boot up.

So the supplier asks me to update the BIOS and make sure it is set to autodetect the memory, which it was. I did both including clearing the CMOS.

I am still only getting 512Kb.

Has anybody got any ideas before we press for a replacement??

Thanks

Gavin

Your 8K5A3+ board supports 1GB DIMMs so if it's detecting 512MB it's probably a 512MB stick. I would ask them to replace it, since you bought a 1GB stick they shouldn't have any problem letting you trade it for a new one.

Thanks.

I was thinking that but there are chips down both sides of it, where as the 2 512s that I took out to swap with my friend, only have chips on one side.

Would that change your response knowing that?

Nope. :)

You can get single or double sided RAM. If half the stick wasn't working I'd expect a few more problems than it only detecting 512MB. Double sided modules are very common.

You shouldn't have a problem, you paid for a 1GB stick and didn't get it. Any company should be happy to exchange sticks to correct that kind of problem.
