me and my cable

i have recently purchased a new dell computer and on it there is an IEEE 1394 port. before purchasing this computer i got a digital camera (camcorder) and with it came a standard 4 pin cable firewire.it was sony so i think its not an actual firewire but has the sony "i" logo on both ends. i have not succeded in downloading video to my computer. i need help in understanding the port on the computer and the cable. both ends of the cable are the same four pin configuration.

cd

did you use the cd packet that came with the camcorder.......If I am correct you and I are using pretty close to the same camcorder but mine would do nothing until I put the picture package cd in ;)
