Media Center / Multiple OS Questions

Was finishing up setting my PC up as a home theater deal, and wanted to customize and organize things a little differently. I know that I have the room and specs to run multiple OS's on one computer, but instead of changing and restarting every time I wanted to go from say, XP to Media Center Edition, is there a stand alone Media Center option or something, say along the lines of just a separate user account that would open directly into Media Center?

And, Im not a huge fan of Vista, but would it be better to just go with Vista Home Premium or Ultimate and go with the inclusive Media Center? What are the options here? Total Newb! Help!

There is really no difference from Home Premium and Ultimate except extra apps! You could run a virtual machine!

wait, so, virtual machine... what does that take?? Is that like, running an OS within an OS? I'd like to avoid using Vista at all if I can. Hate that program.

But yea, virtual machine. that sounds wonderful. Tell me more wise ones!!!
