I'm planning a media PC for our lounge... should I get windows XP Media Centre edition, or is there a Vista equivelant?

I had a short experience with Vista Ultimate and have seen its media centre functionality - looked pretty good to me... but i thought it was just another feature that once windows had loaded, you could open it...

can Vista Ultimate boot directly into the "media mode"?

Vista Ultimate is an OS, just like MCE. The only difference in these and the home editions is the media functionality and options.

yeah i've used the media centre in Vista Ultimate, but my question is will it boot directly into the "media mode"? When I used Vista Ultimate, i opened it from within windows - i didnt see if it could boot directly into the media centre...
I dont want to have to wait till windows loads, then open the media centre, i want to have it boot straight into the media centre...

I know windows XP MCE does that, but i'm not sure about Vista Ultimate.

XP MCE is just a media center with no normal windows computer integration. this would mean that you would only be able to use Medea such as music and video with it.

If you got windows vista ultimate, the Vista version of Media Center is built in to it. You just load up vista like a normal computer and open up the media center like you would do an application and it just runs on the front of the computer. This means unlike XP MCE you can switch between windows and media center so you get the best of both worlds.

XP MCE is much cheaper and will be fine for a media player computer, but vista ultimate is more expensive but gives you the advantage of being able to use it like a normal computer aswell.

Ovcourse, you could always duel boot your media computer with XP MCE and windows.

Windows XP Media Center Edition is an operating system of its own (that is, if you can call Windows an operating system in the first place :P ). There is a 'Windows XP Media Center Edition' that usually comes of 'Media Center' PCs, and you can't actually get the 'Media Center' program anywhere, because it is fully integrated with the Windows OS. (and I should know, seeing as I have one).

Windows Vista comes with an application called 'Media Center' so long as you have a decent edition of it (I know 'Home *' editions do)

Even then, if you look at the video for Linux Media Center I think you'll realize which is better :) (Windows MCE isn't too great- Linux MCE... well... quite the opposite).
