After a friend of mine set up Pinnacle studio 9 on my machine all of my media files stopped working properly. I tried to play a file I would get an error message, after that a drwatson error message. Then the machine would freeze. I couldn't delete or right click any files. I then installed a new HD, installed the os and other software. Still I cannot play media files, music skips and video (divx/xvid) freezes after about 30 seconds. I tried formatting the hard drives but still the problem persists. I have downloaded all of the codecs I can think of. Installed VLC media player, Divx player and upated the Microsoft media player to v10. I have run out of idea's.

What can I do?

Do you still have Pinnacle installed? Have you checked the extensions of your media files to make sure they havent been changed?
Do they play ok on a portable mp3 player? can you burn them to a Audio(.cda) CD and play them on a CD player?
Try downloading the "K-Lite Full Codec pack" from http://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=801&s=95
I currently use this codec pack and it may help you.

No, Pinnacle is not installed. How do you check the extensions? I dont have a portable device. When I wrote them to disc they still stick and jump. I installed K-Lite Full Codec pack but still doesnt help.

Thanks for the help though.

Open the folder that they are in and see if they are still labled as mp3/wma etc...
Hold the cursor over one of the mp3 files and wait a few secs for the info box to pop up atomaticaly... what bitrate does it say the files are?

also right-click on one of them then select 'properties', what does it say is the default program used to open it is?

Also, Click on Start then navigate to "\Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Event Viewer". Check the entries in there against the date & time that the PC froze and had the errors...what errors does it sa

Have you made any changes to virtual memory settings in windows?

First of all the avi files say "Summary properties are unavailable for the selected source(s)". I am not able to see anywhere where it says about the mp3 files only they are 128kbps.

One of the messages in the event viewer says "Faulting application virtualdub.exe, version 1.5.10.0, faulting module xvidcore.dll, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x000449b8" and another says "The COM+ Event System failed to fire the ConnectionMade method on subscription {3947D872-81E7-42E6-9C2B-A2D97A529118}-{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}-{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}. The subscriber returned HRESULT 80004001.
". I have not made any changes in my virtual memory
