memory and resources issue

i have done a reinstall of window 7. i have installed microsoft security essentials, office 2003, skype. when i start the pc, i watch my handles reach a level of 2million, i see my memory reach 2.5gb of my 3gb total. all this is monitored via device manager. when it gets to 2,5gb of memory the whole pc just shuts down or freezes where you cant even use the mouse, also i get messages telling me i dont have permission to shut down. can anyone tel me what is going on, i have schedulled my virus checker and the such to do the function a n spesific day, but it still happens. as i write this, i have been on just an hour and i am upto 1.54gb of memory, the cpu usage is fine.

Go into Msconfig and then go to the Startup tab and disable stuff that does not need to be starting up when Windows does. I'd also check your RAM using Memtest86, just download it from their site, burn the ISO to a CD and then boot off it. Run the test for a good 6-12 hours to get an idea about what's going on.
