Memory Check Problems

I have an unusual problem when my pc boots up. For about a year now when it does the memory check on boot it keeps counting up the amount of RAM but never finishes. I have to press escape to continue booting up the pc and then everything works fine.

Just recently however the computer will boot up and the screen has the normal initial boot up screen but next to where it says testing memory there is nothing where the computer would normally speed through the memory counting. The computer is then frozen on boot and pressing escape will not let me continue.

I've checked that the memory is firmly seated in the slot by taking it out and pressing it firmly back in again but the problem remains.

Any ideas what it might be and how i can fix it? Be happy to take pictures of anything on screen or inside pc if it helps.

does it just keep on checking it? Cause my computer did that but it only checks it like 3 times. Leave it on for a while and see if it eventually gets out of it? Try enabeling quick boot in your bios.

sounds like you had a slighty malfunctioning ram stick which over time has turned into a non-functioning one

The computer does just keep checking it on every boot. I've tried to leave it and let it finish itself but it takes about 5 minutes, then loads as normal. The problem is that it just does the same thing on next boot though. I might try that quick boot thing but if there's a problem with the memory i'd rather find out what it is than skip the memory test.

I have two 256 ram sticks in my pc so do you think one or both of them are playing up? Is it worth trying it with just one of them and then trying the other to see if it is one of them?

Are there any software programs i can use to check the ram sticks without this trial and error procedure though!

if you have more than one ram stick try removing one and try your system, then swap the sticks and then try again.
this should tell you where the problem lies, if you only have one stick try another stick of ram if possible.

edit - you got there before me with that post lol

Yeah, i might try booting with one and then the other. The problems gonna be that sometimes they work and sometimes they don't though so it might take a while and a hell of a lot of restarts to find out which one is the culprit. Do you know of any diagnostic programs i can use?
