Memory Compatibility and speeds

From what I understand PC2 6400(800mhz) is backwards compatible with PC2 5300(667mhz) I just got 2, 2gb 6400 sticks and I was wondering if I installed them with the other two 1gb 5300 sticks would the new 6400 function at the 5300 speed or would they be independent and function at their normal operating speed (800mhz) . I’m using a MSI P6N SLi Platinum nForce 650i Socket 775 duel core 2.0GHZ.
 
They will run at the slowest speed of all the sticks you have installed. So in your case it will all run at PC5300 speeds.

Bingo.

Next time, try and get the fastest ram your mobo will take. Otherwise, you're just handcuffing your system's performance.

I just got Sli board, and the 5300 is the ram outta my old Acer that i wanted to reuse but since its going to slow down the new 6400 sticks i'ma just pawn it off (the 5300) on a frend in need thanks alot guys!

If you have the sticks in dual-channel, the performance loss is going to be minimal (not noticeable in any real-life applications, not even Crysis) and you'll only notice an *insignificant* ()if even that improvement by removing the 5300 sticks it they have really bad timings. Generally amount>speed as far as RAM in concerned.
