memory for ancient desktop

this box is pitiful. a memory upgrade would do it wonders. my question is this: how much memory can I put in? it's a hp pavillion xe783 that shipped with winme and 64 mb ram. i've recently installed xp pro sp3 and a 128 mb chip. all the memory finder tools say that 512mb is the maximum, but is that figure os specific? isn't xp supposed to handle 4gb? my motherboard is Asus CUW-AM/MEW-AM 1.13 with Phoenix Technologies LTD 2.04 08/15/00 bios. memory type is 168-pin DIMM SDRAM PC133 and i have seen some 512mb chips on ebay.

it's not that i'm too lazy to search for the info, i've been searching all morning. i just thought that maybe someone else may already know the answer or can point me in the correct direction.

you might check the manufacturer's website for a BIOS Flash. Perhaps they have an update that will allow more memory.

Motherboards these old usually don't have anymore updates. It would be a waste of time anyways. It's not like you're going to put Vista on it... And motherboards this old don't have dual BIOS, so if you mess up... It's the end of that chip.

desktop memory and Windows XP

What's the minimum amount of desktop memory that Windows XP can run on? I've seen it on my older machine (that's basically halfway to the dumpster now) down to around 120mb memory when first being installed. However, once service packs, etc., get back on top of that generic recovery software it's well over 200mb. That's even after disabling unnecessary services.

Please do not post in old threads, you should have created a new one. However, the answer to your question is, to run XP efficeintly, you need 512MB to 1GB if you don't do anything memory intensive. If you do then I would recommend 2gb - 3gb but that also depends on what your system supports.
