I have a Gateway GM5472 desktop which came with 2gb of memory. I decided to increase it to 4gb and got the specs from the Gateway site, which said:
"Installed: 2048 MB DDR2, 667 MHz, (PC2-5300) dual channel memory (two 1024 MB DIMMs) Expandable to: 4 GB (4 DDR2 DIMM slots)"
I bought 4gb of memory, in 1gb modules, on ebay and they were as follows:
"1024mb (1 GB) X 2 sticks (2GB total), PC2-5300 667Mhz, 240 pin DDR2 memory, Unbuffered, Non ECC, Non Registered, CL4.
The new modules arrived, I installed them, and the PC wouldn't boot correctly -- it cycled back to the strart screen prior to the Vista splash screen. I tried to see what there might be in the BIOS to make it work, but couldn't figure this out either. On the chips it says "PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 128Mx64 1GB 1GBPLURTXLBB"
I finally looked at the memory that did work in it, the installed 2gb, and it says on the modules:
HYMP512U64CP8-Y5-AB 0716C PC2-5300U-555-12 1GB 2RX8"
So, with all of the above, I have began to think that the existing memory may be a 5-5-5 type and the new 4-4-4 type (not sure of this, but the new says CL4 and the old had a 555 in the number. If that is the case, do I need to be shopping forCL5? Is there something else in the BIOS for me to change? Do you think the memory itself is just NG (the new stuff)?
If it is of any help, I looked at the motherboard and it is made by ECS for Gateway. It is a MCP61PM-AM Rev 1.0A (see http://www.ascendtech.us/itemdesc.asp?ic=MB64GWMCP61PMAM&eq=&Tp=).
Any help you can give in figuring this out would be great! Want to get the memory set up in the machine (4gb).
