Memory install problem.. very troubling

hey everyone, just got a xl 766 HP , PIII w/ 128 DIMM PC100 stock. its old, but better than nothing since my computer died last month. the problem i'm having is installing more memory.

I had 2 DIMM chips laying around, 64 MB, and a 128 MB chip. I installed them into slot 2 and 3. XP in only recognizing the 64 MB chip. But the odd thing is Everest can see the 128 MB chip in slot 3, but the computer is only reading 192 total, 128 MB slot 1, 64 mb slot 2.

Any advice? i was thinking about switching the chips in slot 2 and 3 to see if it would fix the problem.
 
The second 128mb simm is probably PC133 not PC100 memory and not able to run on that system. You will likely end up buying two more 128mb PC100 simms to see a total of 768mb there.
 
everest says they are all pc100, so i think that is not the problem

well, i moved the 64 mb chip to slot 3 and the 128 mb chip to slot 2, with the original 128 chip in slot 1 still. the bios detected 320 mb of ram, so i thought all was well. but then booting into win xp, computer decided to restart itself. it kept doing this with this mem config!

i've tried moving the 128 original chip to slot 2, and putting the other 128 chip in slot 1, w/ the 64 chip in slot 3, but she didn't like that, just beeped when started.. my last option is putting the 64 chip in slot 1, and swapping the others in 2 and 3. maybe later, but i hate dealing w/ these HP boxes, worst design ever, PSU in in front of the motherboard, mem slots are hidden behind the 5.25 bays.

Put the original 128 back in the first slot and run the 64mb simm until buying one or two new 128s. The 128 you had lying is likely toast at this point. The larger simm when seeing those two added in was required in the second not third slot when mixing sizes.

That would explain why it went better with the 64 put in the last slot. Old boards were far more fussy on those details. You could also try the 128s together without the 64 in to see if the simm is bad or the board is simply rejecting the mismatched sizes.

Try putting the 2 128 mbs sticks in slot 1 and 2 and see if it picks up 256mbs. If not try the 128 that you had laying around by itself and see if it boots just with that stick. If not it might be a bad stick of Ram.

the bios picks up 320 mb of ram when i put the 128 in slot 2, and 64 in slot 3, but then when xp loads, the computer just restarts.... ahhh!!! the current setup i'm using now is the original 128 slot 1, 64 in slot 2, and 128 in slot 3, it only picks up 192mb, doesn't see slot three... maybe updating the bios will help? its the original
 
The old boards added memory collectively from slot to slot with the largest proceeding the smallest when adding memory. If you were seeing a 64 in the #1 slot you would have to move that to the #2 slot when adding a 128mb in.
