memory lost

i have 1024MB (4X512) of RAM on my pc now when i recently checked how much RAM i have it was 1000MB (1GB). what happend to 24MB of RAM? where did that go? is there anyway i can get those 24MB of RAM back?
 
The only way to explain it is...... its a bit like overheads on an internet connection. Windows retains a chuink of your RAM to place system code and processes in.

This code is needed all the time so it musnt be used by any other program, to do this windows simply tells all the other applications that there is only 1000Mb available
 
I have 512MB of RAM in my computer. I didn't install it myself so I don't know what type it is etc.
Trouble is I've had a bit of nightmare trying to rid my system of Norton Antivirus, and had a serious crash or two along the way. Now it says I have only 256MB of ram in the system details screen. Could a setting have been screwed up, or is it more likely that a strip of ram has bitten the bullet?
 
Hmmm

I have the same "problem" with mine. However, it's a fault of the Windows Operating System (XP in my case). It ignores the actual physical size being 1024MB and reports it as 1.00 GB, which when you think about it...is actually correct (1.000000 GB means 1 GB = 1024 MB). Haha...try using some other tool such as CPUID or something and you will see that it will report it as 1024MB.

I tried the program you mentioned, just for the hell of it.
It says I have 512MB.

Man I so don't get computers.

Is this CPUID totally reliable? For my memory to show up there does it have to be working ok?

I'm doing a full format later this week, so I don't care too much about glitches in the system, but I would like to know if all my components are working alright.
 
Well...

CPUID is reliable. Did you see any performance decrease? I really do not think that you would lose 256 just like that.

Well, windows looks at the BIOS and CMOS setup to find out how much RAM you have installed, so try upgrading or flashing your BIOS, it may have become slightly corrupted.

all you ram should be ok, if it was on the blink then i'd expect it to manifest itself in other ways, problems booting, unstable running os
 
ok i used CPUID it says i do have 1024MB of RAM :-) but on the CPUID under performance section it says "disable" is that normal?
