youll also get more memory.

24mb worth.
how you figure that?

the 2x512MB would be faster b/c of dual channel, but 1x1GB wouldnt be bad, because later you could buy another 1GB stick and dual channel that....

If you were running a gaming system getting a matched pair of 1gb dimms with fast timings would be ideal. Memory like that however will generally see a higher price over the usual performance and value memory available. For a system where you plan on having more then one program running the dual channel mode offers the first channel for the active programs while background services for Windows and minimized programs should be forced to use the secondary.

When the first dimm is smaller the amount of memory used it fills up first causing a bleedover to the next dimm. This can cause problems known as "memory holes". When running high end games or large programs that draw heavily on system resources capacity becomes a key word. The larger dimm lessens memory holes resulting in better performance all around. On newer systems with newer apps as well as games larger ram is becoming the need there. For single channel mode or on a board that lacks a dual channel mode the larger single dimm would be the best move there.

guess i got told....

sorry for giving n00b advice! :)

Another thing is to remember the type of board and application as well. Where most of the older model boards were strictly single channel like the Socket 754 models as well while the Socket A that are and S939 boards as well as Intel models are now mainly dual channel already where having mulitple dimms enables that mode. A single dimm there would see only the primary channel used. With larger programs like some new graphics intensive shooter games with the high end detailing more ram is often needed when performance losses are seen. The jump from one dimm to the next seen even on 512s suggests building a gaming machine with a large amount of ram as well as that being a fast memory type. Dual channel mode puts background services and apps on a secondary freeing up ram for these new games as well as other large apps. At times that will speed things up over a single dimmed pc. So you are not completely incorrect there. :)
