Memory question

I have a 512MB stick of memory in the PC. When I go to My computer> right click>properties, it displays 384MB. I did a crucial scan and it says I can go to 2048MB maximum.

My question is why would a 512 stick only show 384?

I'm running xp pro and would like to add memory. I'm thinking about adding 1G only, but the display of 384 is new to me.

Most computers can control how much VRAM takes from RAM in BIOS.
Go into BIOS and you can change the values there (if your computer has them of course).
Still if you play games or use programs that need a lot of VRAM then the more it shares from RAM the better,BUT the worse for RAM then...in these cases if you need more RAM you can either use PAGE FILE feature from Windows OS or buy more RAM.
It all depends how much you want to spend and what you are doing.

I for example have an old computer which still has 512 MB of RAM memory, but at least the graphics I have is a separated 64 MB VRAM card so nothing is shared from RAM so it's a little bit better than yours.
The difference is especially noticed in games.
