memory question...

hey
i have a 2 year old pc. it has a syntax sv266a motherboard which is designed for athlon xp and durons chips with a fsb of 266.
it takes 266 ddr ram and 133 sdram

i want to upgrade the memory on this pc, it currently has 256mb sdram 133

im going to be building a new pc in a few months, it will have athlon 64 and will also have 1gb of ddr 400. so what im thinking of doing is im going to buy the

1gb of ddr 400 now, put it in the 2 year old syntax motherboard for the moment to serve as a memory upgrade, and then when it comes to making the new

pc in a few months, i can take the 1gb out and use it in the new athlon 64 pc

dya get what i mean?

so i guess my question is, will ddr 400 (1gb) fit and work properly in a syntax sv266a motherboard with an amd duron 1800 fsb266?
can ddr 400 work in a ddr 266 slot?

i hope you can help me out
thank you very much

it will fit- if your mobo has 184 pin DDR. And the ddr400 will work at the reduced speeds that the motherboard has for limits, so it will work. Make sure you can put a gig into the board first.

thanks a lot for you help!
so your definately sure the 1gb or ddr 400 will work providing it fits and 1gb per slot is supported?
ino theres different situations with different boards, but is that the general trend? can you normally use ddr400 with ddr266?

thanks again!

Im pretty sure you can- just look at the max memory supported for your board and make sure you can put more than 512 in each slot. And yes, ddr400 will usually work, itll just function at 226 speeds.
