memory replacement

I have an emachines T6412. Today I got a great deal on PNY memory at a local store and made sure it was compatable with my machine. Originally I had 512 mb and bought two 1GB sticks to replace it with. I put it in the machine and the tabs locked it into place. When I tried to power up the machine, the power light came on but the machine wouldn't start. I did get the fan to start up once for just a quick second but then it shut off and didn't come back on. I took out one stick and tried to reboot. Still nothing. Then put the original 512 back in. Still nothing. The power light comes on and blinks but thats all I can get. Did I do something wrong? There are no wires loose anywhere. I have replaced memory before in a couple of other computers over the years without any issues. Should I just take the machine in to have it checked or is there something I might be able to do?
I sure would appreciated any advice. Like everyone else, we cannot do without the computer for very long. (And my daughter doesn't like me using this one... hers!) Thanks so much for any help.

If you bought dual sided dimms which that model should support make sure it was DDR400 PC3200 memory usually value ram not performance memory for their systems. That wouldn't prevent the reinstall of the 512mb dimm from running however. You may have to clear the cmos to see if that will reset everything and except the new memory. Another thought is simply a weak battery on the board failing right then needing replacement. That will stall a system right there. How old is the system?

The specifications for that model are seen at http://www.emachines.com/support/product_support.html?cat=Desktops&subcat=T-Series&model=T6412 showing it supports upto 4gb of memory. So the simply swap out of memory wouldn't be the problem unless you have no board speaker and the 512 isn't seated fully? Recheck the wires coming from the front panel to the board in case you bumped one of those while inside the case. Odd things can happen.

finally had to bring the computer in to have it checked. There were 3 small connections that were loose. They found it, fixed them and all is well.
Thanks much for your help!

You bumped something apparently? oops! Glad to see you have that corrected now. It can happen very easily where you brush up against one or two things without notice. At least it wasn't anything major.
