Memory Timings

i was just browsing though bios just now and saw memory timings, it set to 4-4-4-14. I had a quick play with it and put it up to 5-5-5-15. before i got a vista index score of 5.3 but by increasing it's gone to 5.5. What is memory timing? and is it safe to play about with it?
Thanks

Wow. I thought the Latency timings get better as they are lowered, guess i was wrong. I have no idea what the timing mean. They have something to do with CAS or something.

mmmm how odd, well i just try putting it down to 3-3-3-13 and it crashed and the bios into safe mode  so that dont work, right now they are running at 6-6-6-16 but vista hasn't changed the score so ill put it down to 5-5-5-15. as for the CAS, haven't got a clue what that is

Lower timings are better. Latencies simply mean how many clock cycles it takes to [do something]. CAS is a latency of sorts, but other latencies affect performance as well. Vista ratings are something you shouldn't rely on, though; they can be used as a guideline, but using Vista Performance Index as a benchmark is probably about as accurate as comparing processors by their clockspeed...
