Memory Upgrade

I had a total of 512MB of ram in my computer and added 256 to one of my empty slots to make programs come up quicker and seems to make a little differance but not much. My computer recognizes the memory that I put in and just wondered if I need to add more in order for my programs to come up quicker? Also, whenever I reboot my computer I hear a beeping sound and it never did that before I added my other stick of memory and wondered if that was normal?
Thanks.

Apparently the memory you "threw in" without knowing the specifications on that and the memory already in use saw a conflict with timings or it was simply the wrong speed or type. When adding memory you want to match it as closely as possible. If you are running 512mb of DDR 400 PC3200 memory the best memory to add is the same size, type, and even make.

What programs are you using? You may not be using the extra RAM (or are using it not very often).

If you are for example running DDR400 and drop a stick of 333 in that will play a role in seeing a slower response time. The audio alert shows incompatibilty or simply a fault dimm.
