alright. my brother has a compaq presario 6415CL and he needs more memory bad. its freezing and running really slow. i know quite a bit about computers but im not sure what to get him for fast memory. he wants to get 512mb more because thats all his slots can support and he has 256 in his other. his price limmit is 70$ and we need the fastest and more reliable memory for that price. but he needs a pretty fast chip. also what are some of the reasons it freezes up? he only has internet explorer and msn up and i freezes and almost every night if freezes and all that will be up is msn. its really weird. but memory..i dont understand a whole lot. here is a link with what kind it needs.

but i went to kingstons website and it said "This system supports both DDR266 (KTC-PR266/xx) and DDR333 (KTC-D320/xx) memory. Regardless of what is installed, the memory will only run at DDR266 (PC2100)"

i was wanting to get this. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820141402

but would that make it alot faster and more stable? thanks alot..

If you're looking for the fastest memory possible, the last RAM in the world you want besides OEM junk is Kingston ValueRAM.

That's one of the more "lame" assumptions there! The problems being seen there can be from a cpu overheating or faulty memory. A pair of Kingston DDR400 PC3200 will require a bios setting of 200mhz. That will see the full pontential of the "2x200mhz". Some cheapo memory like Geil or G.Skills if not some generic off make would be the ones to see problems.

I removed a pair of Corsair xms series dimms here for a pair of Kingston Value Ram 1gb dimms and haven't seen one problem and a performance gain at the same time. The current 266mhz 256mb dimm should be tested with a memory diagnostic like memtest to see if that has developed faults. Meanwhile you can download SpeedFan free for monitoring cpu and board temps at http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

Another thing to ask here would be if the bios has ever been updated on that model. The age of the system would also suggest you are now seeing a weak lithium battery on the board itself causing the loss of cmos info.

wow! thanks a ton! you really sound like you know what your talking about. so should we go with that kingston? also how would we update the bios?

No, he doesn't, believe me...

Anyways, if you're looking for performance, you would want to look at the HyperX, Corsair XMS, OCZ and the like. ValueRAM is exactly that. Budget memory with low performance chips on it.

The Kingston will do fine. For those that want to push the ultimate out of their systems every little bit is all the world there. For the average user wanting a mid range system Kingston's Value Ram actually performs better then the Corsair xms series I have here.

With an older system like a CompaQ now owned by HP you will have to go directly to their support at the link here to waht is still available for that model. The manual can also be downloaded giving the needed instructions for updating the bios. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?lc=en&lang=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=240127&os=228

On a 3 or 4 year old system they are not going to want to max anything out while simply trying to keep it running with replacement memory.

Ummmm. If you noticed the OP, he asked for the "fastest" RAM. It should be me rolling my eyes right now, but currently you are the least of my worries.

Oh sorry I didn't see you there. Did you say something? Just the usual nonsense I suppose.

When trying to upgrade memory on a Compaq you don't want to rush right out and buy the highest price memory with the fastest timing for a system board that won't even support it. Besides "faster" you seemed to have missed one there. "more reliable" like the Kingston SuperRAM 2x512mb dimm set seen for a little more then the $70 mark at $86.99. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820156020
