hi, I'll start off with how I came across this problem and if i need to fix it or not.

I have quite a few videos that are in mkv format and I want to convert them to mp4, avi with the subtites. I found a way of doing so using a video converter called "AllToAVI" and here is where the problem starts when I start converting after a little while it will come up with a message box saying mencoder.exe has crashed and the video conversion will stop. I've done a bit of research on mecoder but cant find anything. plz help.

p.s. before I discovered 'AllToAvi' I used "AVS Video Converter" to convert mkv to avi, but the subtitles had low resolution and some lines where missing.

so can anyone plz help!!!

I can't help with your specific software. I've used AutoMKV which is quite a good all-round free converter although the dialogs are quite intense. You could also look at Format Factory. Format Factory has some limits on how specific you can be with the end product.

kk thnx for the input, I've downloaded both converters. AutoMKV I dont understand it really, I load a file but I cant choose to turn it avi and there is a lot of other advanced stuff I dont get. It also doesnt seem to recognise the subs. (I think) I cant find any decent tutorials on youtube.

Filefactory seems ok, right now its in the middle of converting. I cant find the place where it allows me to select whether it wants the subtitles or not from the mkv file but it does allow you to load subtitles externally. Also I find it quite odd that you have to set the end time of the output file. Is there anyway to make the end time of the output file the same as the end time of the original file as default? Because of this I converted the file and it was 1min long, but because of that it was done quickly and I was able to confirm that it had converted it with subtitles. Haza!!!

I was about to give up after automkv, so I was gona abandon my quest to convert mkv to avi/mp4 with subtitles and instead try to extract the subtitles from it, convert the mkv then add them

AutoMKV is quite complicated to set up. You don't necessarily have to go into Advanced Settings on the second tab. A simple conversion you can usually set up on the Basic tab only. If you want to crop or resize, that is on the Advanced tab, bottom left.

Format Factory has that strange setup where you select the files after the format. If you are having problems setting times, ignore the Option button which is for editing the timeline. If you leave that untouched the entire video is selected. However, there is a box in that dialog for setting the subtitle language. Assuming your language appears, select it and hit OK without changing anything else. I don't bother with subtitles so I can't really help more on that.

I don't use Format Factory myself but I've been playing around with it. On the face of it, you have limited choices in the menus but I found you can manually enter what you want. For example, if you wanted your video to be 400x300, you can select one of the presets and alter to 400x300.

If you want to figure out how to use the software, you can reduce the video to a short time in Options so you only have to render a minute or so to see the results. Once you have the settings you want, render the entire video.
