Messaging Across a Network

Hey guys,

I searched the forum the best I could before posting this and couldn't find anything.

Anyway, is there a way (without having to have identical software on both ends) to send a message to a computer that is connected to your network? For example, if I can see via iTunes' Shared Library list that there is someone connected to and using my wireless network, is there anyway to message them?

To my knowledge, net send is the only way to send a message across to a separate PC without any third-party software.
Unfortunately thanks to the abundance of bad things (spam) that can happen with the messenger service required for net send, it is usually disabled.

I've messed around with net send on my windows based pc but what about with Mac?

Is there a solution for messaging across a network that is utilized by different operating systems?

i messed around with it also. for xp. i think but forgot one of the requiresments is instant messenger. mines working at home but forgot and jumped thourh loops getting it working. use f1 for xp 'netsend'.if ya figure it out let me know. i forgot and curious now.

Just use a chat client? Like something jabber based? That way you can IM between Mac, Winders, and Linux!
